Investigators must first have their protocol application for use of select agents and/or toxins reviewed and approved by the Institutional
Biosafety Committee (IBC). Protocol applications involving pathogens and toxins that
are listed on the federal governments select agents and toxins list, must be reviewed
at a convened meeting of the IBC.
There are many steps involved in receiving university and federal approval to use
select agents, including a background check known as a security risk assessment. Investigators
are encouraged to allow plenty of lead time. We recommend that you contact the Office
of University Research Compliance for guidance on how to proceed with acquiring approval
to work with select agents and toxins.
