Oklahoma State University's official Carnegie classification is R1 Doctoral University
with the highest research activity, which is Carnegie's top classification for research
universities. Only 146 universities of America's 5900 institutions qualified for this
prestigious designation in the latest report.
Being a Carnegie R1 research institutions provides opportunities for private and public
partnerships and offers opportunities for economic growth in the state. As a land-grant
institution, OSU's research projects are aimed at improving the quality of life for
Oklahomans and addressing future technology needs.

Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey
Conducted annually by the National Science Foundation (NSF), this survey collects
data on research and development (R&D) activities at higher education institutions.
Research activities and expenditures are reported for the institution's fiscal year.
NSF defines R&D activity as creative and systematic work undertaken in order to increase
the stock of knowledge — including knowledge of humankind, culture, and society —
and to devise new applications of available knowledge. R&D includes basic research,
applied research, and experimental development.
